Well Saturday was Rye Bonfire Night and with the weather completely touch-and-go we really didn’t know whether it was even going to take place.
However, the rain stayed away long enough and it wasn’t even that cold.
We knew a friend of my ds1 was coming down on the train with his Dad & girlfriend, but I wasn’t expecting the huge crowd of people who knocked on my door on Saturday evening, and only a handful of them I knew!! However, they were lovely people and we soon got chatting, helped no end by our ‘new’ games room, and a game of darts, girls versus boys……unfortunately the boys won, but only just!
We then tumbled out into the streets of Rye and lined the parade route….I had missed last year’s as my ds2 doesn’t like loud noises, but this year I was determined to see it. There is a procession first through the streets of Rye, which you can hear approaching by the drummers, followed by (Health & Safety look away) various local bonfire societies’ members carrying lit torches, and then some floats, one was a fire-breathing dragon, another a fishing boat (very apt for Rye) with buckets tied to the end of their fishing lines, and we tried to throw our pennies and get them in the buckets.
We then made our way down to the Salts (a green which was once covered by the sea, which now hosts many events in Rye and is home to the bowls club too). There the torch-bearers lit the bonfire and the fireworks started. It was a spectacular display culminating in a huge golden firework that looked just like a weeping willow tree – and this was ALL FREE!!!
There aren’t many places you can go and get all this and not pay a penny! Unfortunately it wasn’t as busy as last year my dh assured me, I think the possibility of bad weather had put some off coming and I can’t say I blame them.
We all then filed back to our house for a hot drink and a warm up. I got chatting to my friends’ friends, and it transpires that one of them used to work for the same bank as me, AND in the very same branch here in Rye!!! Not only that, but I also found out that at least 3 of them had gone to the same school as me in New Romney, but they are a bit older so wouldn’t have been there at the exact same time as me, but nevertheless we felt like the world was a very small place Saturday night and also gave us some great talking points.
We all had a great time, our new friends caught the train back to Ashford, we all had a late night and so just spent Sunday vegging, catching up on Coronation Street and X Factor – what a shocker that Laura White went, I couldn’t believe it!!!???
This week I need to desperately sort out some stuff for the shop birthday celebrations and also order more christmas stock…..so that’s where I’m off to now folks.
So until next time…….best wishes,
Nicola. X
